Niki Thomas

B.A. Physics & Mathematics (Class of 2017)

What I am doing currently: PhD Student in Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics at UCSC

Areas of Specialty: Molecular Biology, Molecular Engineering, Bioinformatics, and Astrobiology

Places I've worked learned or traveled:
RCUH, Kilohana Math Center, NASA, and the University of California. I also studied abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea for 2 years.

Bio:
I was born in Northern California and moved around the west coast of the mainland my whole life while I lived with my Mother. I would also visit my father who lived on Kauai. I like to consider myself as being from Earth. When I was a kid, my grandfather gave me a microscope and a telescope that I adored; so I guess that's why I'm so passionate about Astrobiology! My ultimate dream is to see world peace and humanity's subsequent advancement into space.

What attracted me to UH Hilo P&A:
Honestly, I came to UH because Hawaii reminds me of my late father and I feel at home there. But it also just so happened that UH Hilo P&A has direct connections to the most influential astronomy and space science communities in the world. I saw what the department had to offer and fell in love.

Advice:
Follow thermodynamics and try to give just as much as you take. Live with Aloha no matter where you are.

Best Regards,
Niki Thomas
